Bit Gag

Eve's notes about the Bit Gag

The Bit Gag is a made by coiling the rope on itself. It creates a wide section which you or your partner should place in the mouth and gently bite to keep in place.

The Bit Gag's size depends largely on the diameter of the rope you use. In our tutorials, we use a 1/4 inch diameter. This width works great for this gag because it fits in the mouth without forcing the jaw too wide. A wider diameter might create a bit gag that is too big for use. A smaller diameter would result in a smaller gag which might be more comfortable but could allow the user to talk.

The entire point of a gag is to impede verbal communication. That said, in Shibari, restricting verbal communication could be dangerous. The person being tied needs to be able to communicate any discomfort or pleasure to their partner. This is why, even though the difficulty level of this tie is Easy, I do not recommend beginners or first-time Shibari partners use it.

That said, once you have reached a deep level of connection and understanding with your partner such that you can interpret their non-verbal communication effectively, the Bit Gag is something you should try. Besides creating a set of hand gestures that signal stop and discomfort, as the person tying, you should understand what your partner is feeling just by looking at their eyes or feeling the tension in their muscles. Not being able to rely on verbal communication will force you to pay very close attention to your partner's every move. This is how you discover their unique behaviors. This is where you will notice the beauty of small details.

Enjoy this path of discovery and connection.

Have fun tying!
