Gags are fun.
The horse gag specifically is a fantastic choice for beginners. Not only is it easy and quick to tie, it is also as comfortable as gags get and allows the user to talk and be understood (albeit with some difficulty).
During a Shibari session, it is essential for the person being tied to be able to communicate effectively with the person tying. Being able to express when they are uncomfortable and when something is hurting is essential for their safety. Having the ability to give positive feedback when they are enjoying a particular tie or position is just as important. The success of a Shibari session relies heavily on constant communication between partners.
Gags make verbal communication difficult.
This is why, when starting your exploration into the gag world, I recommend you start with the horse gag. The horse gag leaves some room to talk and while understanding what your partner is saying might be an adventure all on its own, it will be clear that they are trying to communicate something and the urgency of said communication.
I strongly recommend you try the gag on both yourself and your partner before incorporating it into a more complex session. Practice talking to each other with it on and identify what you can and cannot understand. This will make for a fun and playful activity that will gift you with a couple of laughs.
Have fun tying!
