Arms to One Side

Eve's notes about the Arms to One Side Tie

When I first started my Shibari journey I came to the premature conclusion that the positions in which the body can be tied up in are relatively obvious and limited. The rationale was that there are a finite amount of ways the body can twist and bend comfortably enough to be restrained in for an extended period of time.  I thought the beauty of Shibari lay in coming up with creative ties within this constrained world. Boy was I wrong...

The Arms to One Side Tie caught me by surprise and taught me that it was my thinking that was limited, not the positions available for tying. This tie was a sort of revelation, pushing the boundaries of my creativity and inviting me to explore even further. I find the Arms to One Side an incredibly random position and came to find beauty in its randomness.

You will begin by asking your partner to join their palms behind their back and tying a lark's head around them. You will then proceed to create a sort of sling that will keep the arms fixed to one side of the body.

This tie requires some shoulder flexibility to be worn comfortably. Make sure your partner stretches before the session and ask them repeatedly (but not obsessively) how they are feeling and if the tie is too tight. As you progress in your journey, you will be able to translate your partner's non-verbal cues more effectively and the need for verbal communication will decrease. Practice is key!

Have fun tying!
