Large Diamond Karada

Eve's notes about the Large Diamond Karada

The Large Diamond Karada is yet another creative twist on  the traditional Hishi Karada. Remember, "Hishi" translates to diamond, and "Karada" means body, so "Hishi Karada" is "Diamond Body". In our series, we delve into three unique interpretations of the "Diamond Body" harness:

  1. Hishi Karada

  2. Hishi Karada 2.0

  3. Large Diamond Karada

This Large Diamond Karada is deceptively similar to the Hishi Karada 2.0 in the sense that large diamonds are evenly spaced throughout the body. Yet, that's where the similarities end.  Unlike both other versions of the Hishi Karada that use simple overhand knots as structural components to create the diamonds, the Large Diamond Karada employs no knots at all! Instead, it uses Frictions to maintain the ropes' position, leveraging the natural texture of the rope to create friction with itself and hold the tie together.

I must confess, this version is my personal favorite among the Hishi Karada variations. It uses a pair of ropes for each diamond, which gives the lines a bolder, more striking visual presence than single strands. The absence of knots allows the rope to flow uninterrupted throughout the tie, making the process of tying it a fluid and enjoyable journey.

The Large Diamond Karada is an example of how using different techniques to achieve the same objective (the diamond pattern) can result in beautiful variations of a tie. In Shibari, there is usually more than one way of doing things. As you practice, you will gain familiarity with the different techniques and will start leaning towards your favorites. You will discover what you and your partner like and dislike. This is a journey of exploration where questions about your feelings and preferences are important!

Have fun tying!
