Hishi Karada 2.0

Eve's notes about the Hishi Karada 2.0

This Hishi Karada 2.0, translating to "Diamond Body" Tie 2.0, is a variation of the original Hishi Karada. While the basic elements used to create the diamonds remain the same - specifically, using overhand knots along a set of two ropes and then threading the ropes between the knots and reversing the tension - the placement of the overhand knots differs in this version resulting in larger, evenly spaced diamonds across the body.

In our tutorials we go over 3 versions of full-body diamond-pattern ties:

  1. Hishi Karada

  2. Hishi Karada 2.0

  3. Large Diamond Karada

This Hishi Karada 2.0 is a great example of how traditional techniques can be reimagined to create novel patterns. There is nothing inherently new in any particular aspect of this tie and given enough time, practice, and experimentation, I am positive you could have come up with something like it on your own. The capacity to take simple individual elements and techniques and join them in new ways is the mark of an artists, not only in Shibari, but in life as well. I have the firm belief that as humans, we are all artists at heart. All we need is a medium to explore our creativity.

While the components of the Hishi Karada 2.0 are straightforward, the challenge lies in the precision required to tie the overhand knots symmetrically. Failure to do this will result in awkwardly-shaped diamonds and a loss of elegance and aesthetic pleasure. So place close attention while you are tying this tie. This attention to detail is not just about aesthetics; it's about the discipline and mindfulness that Shibari cultivates.

Remember that Shibari is all about the emotional journey to understand yourself and your partner, to cultivate honesty, communication, and trust. Each tie is an opportunity to work on your relationship and to pay attention to each other.

Have fun tying!
