Basic Heel Tie Weave

Eve's notes about the Basic Heel Tie Weave

Yes, this tie looks like something taken out of a macrame book.

Macrame refers to the art of weaving rope in such a way as to create beautiful patterns that are used in all kinds of items ranging from wall decor to clothing. It is no wonder that the exploration of creating patterns with rope, especially for clothing, leads to the world of rope bondage. And indeed, in some circles, Shibari is known as "erotic macrame".

The rising popularity of the art of macrame can be traced all the way back to the 13th century. Back then, Arabs began exporting their beautiful rugs to the rest of the world and created intricate designs with the loose ends. Centuries later, it permeated the Victorian era and became incredibly popular with women of all social backgrounds. Fast forward to the 1970's where it took the hippie culture by storm and finally arrive to the XXI's century. Macrame is now associated with a bohemian lifestyle and is once again finding its way into homes all over the world.

Modern Shibari makes use of macrame principles to go one step beyond function by weaving the rope into beautiful patterns that add to the tie's objective of restraint. In the case of the Heel Weave Tie, we begin by creating an X-shaped structure around the foot. This X-shape will provide the basis for our weave. We will then continue to go over and under this initial X shape until we create a lovely boot.

In our tutorial, we finish this tie by tying a square knot on the sole of the foot. This is a great spot if you are using this tie as a means to attach the foot to an anchor such as a bedpost. That said, you can place the square knot near the ankle instead so you can walk around comfortably using this tie.

Have fun tying!
