Inline Double Coin Knot

Eve's notes about the Inline Double Coin Knot

This is a knot with history and significance pouring out of every rope crossing.

We're first going to take a short trip to ancient China around 300 BC. It was here that the double coin knot made its first appearance in the art of Chinese knotting. Usually tied using red rope for good luck, the double coin knot was used to symbolize the circle of life.

Fast forward a few hundred years and the Chinese double coin knot has been adopted into the macrame tradition and re-named the Josephine Knot. The meaning of this knot has evolved to symbolize eternal love.

In Shibari, this knot has absolutely no functional use but definitely adds flair whenever used as a decoration. The  inline double coin knot offers an elegant way to create decorative patterns along the length of a rope, rather than just at its ends or intersections. Its aesthetic symmetry and ability to lie flat against the skin make it a favored choice for intricate decorative ties, enhancing both the visual appeal and the tactile experience for the person being tied.

Practice tying this decoration on a single rope one after the other. Besides making a beautiful pattern, it will allow you to gain greater dexterity with the ropes.

Have fun tying!
