Spiral Futomomo

Eve's notes about the Spiral Futomomo

As a quick recap, the word "Futomomo" is used to describe a tie that attaches the thigh to the ankle and creates a pattern that goes up the leg to the knee. For a more detailed explanation see our lesson on the H-shaped Futomomo

The Spiral Futomomo is a lovely tie that has the added benefit of being incredibly easy to remember. The tie involves a single column tie around the ankle and then wrapping the rope around the thigh and shin. You will then proceed to use hitches to fix the rope in place. That's basically it.

While tying the hitches in the Spiral Futomomo, you will have to pass a long length of rope under the rope spiral that goes around the leg of the person being tied multiple times. Beware of rope burns! This is the perfect setting for them to happen which is why we set the difficulty level of this tie to Intermediate.

A few recommendations to avoid rope burn:

  1. Whenever you are pulling rope that is in contact with the skin of the person being tied, make sure to do so slowly. You are not being timed and there is no hurry to finish the tie. The slower you pull, the less likely rope burns will happen.
  2. As the person tying, use your fingers to protect your partner's skin by placing them between the rope you are pulling and their skin. This will allow you to pull the rope faster without risking hurting your partner.

Have fun tying!
