Japanese names for Shibari ties are usually descriptive. It helps to know a couple of these terms so you know what the tie is all about from the start. In our tutorials, we use English descriptions to name our ties so as to make it easier for our non-japanese-speaking students.


A

Agoura Shibari - Any tie where the person being tied sits in a crossed-leg position. Note, these ties are less restrictive than the Ebi (Shrimp) Tie

B

Bakushi- Rope artist. Short for kinbakushi

Bo Shibari  - Something that is tied to a pole

D

Deshi- Student

Do nawa- Waist (do) rope (nawa)

E

Ebi Shibari- Tied up (Shibari) like a shrimp (ebi) tie

Ebi zuri- Being suspended by a shrimp tie

F

Futomomo- Thigh. In Shibari, a futomomo makes reference to a leg tie in which the ankle and thigh are tied together

H

Hishi- Tie that has a diamond weave

Hashira Shibari- Tied up (Shibari) to a pole

K

Karada- Full body

kaikyaku kani shibari - crab tie (kani) with legs spread (kaikyaku)

Kinbakushi - rope artist

M

Matanawa - crotch rope

N

Nawa - rope
