One-handed Slip Knot

Eve's notes about the One-handed Slip Knot

As in most new things we learn in life, we're going to be bad before we get any good. In the case of Shibari, being a beginner means that you will no t really know how to control the ropes and the ropes won't behave in exactly the way you expect or want them to. It will take a while for you to feel comfortable and aquire dexterity. That said, there are ways that you can speed up this process. This is where the one-handed slip knot comes into the picture.

When you master this technique, you will be able to tie a slip knot in a couple of seconds. Practicing the on-handed slip knot increases muscle memory, allows you to practice by yourself, and increases your general confidence because of your newly acquired ability to control the ropes with ease.

It is also a great party trick. I used to carry a small length of rope around and bet my friends I could tie them in under 2 seconds. It's almost lika a magic trick that has the added benefit of getting people excited about Shibari. Practice tying this knot around a fixed post and gradually move towards moving objects such as your partner's wrist.

Before you begin, a word of caution. In Shibari, we rarely use slip knots  because they can constrict under tension. Caution is advised when using it, especially in applications where safety is paramount.

Have fun tying!
